January opens with a bang for much of the world and the excitement of New Year helps soften the fact that much of the northern hemisphere is shrouded in cold, damp cloud. New Year's resolutions to keep fit can be kick-started with calorie-busting ski trips to Europe or North America; while souther Europe's temperate climate is also ideal for tennis or a few gentle rounds of golf. The natural world is also sensitive to the seasons, whether cold - as in the forests of Lapland - or warm as in the waters around indonesia.
In the northern hemisphere, although the cloud cover is starting to thin, think snow is possible on the eastern seaboard of the USA and across northern Europe, heading towards the equator, the Caribbean and central America should be welcoming, and even farther south, brazil’s Bahia state is hot and steamy as is it is carnival. Much of the world also puts on a carnival - an over the top celebration before the Lent fast. North and southern Africa are also sunny and worth considering - but stay near the coast. India and Thailand will see plenty of sun but on the other side of the Himalayas, China’s weather varies from frozen in the north to cloudy in the south.
The start of spring in the northern hemisphere brings a time of birth and renewal. Green shoots begin to spear and the temperatures start to rise. Around the world there are festivals celebrating rebirth and the end of winter. In the USA and Canada, spring break sees thousands of college kids hit the beaches to party. Be warned: it’s riotous affair, so you may wish to avoid their favourite spots like Florida, Cancun and Acapulco. In the reversed seasons of the southern hemisphere, Australia is entering autumn, although the northern part of Australia is in the tropics so it really only has two seasons - wet and dry.
While the temperate climates of Europe and North America have not warmed up fully, April still brings an explosion of colour to the northern hemisphere as the flowers and trees break out in bloom - spring is in full swing. This makes it the perfect time to sample the romantic delights of Paris, or to hike the Cinque Terre trails.
This is usually a pleasant month the whole world over. Winter hasn’t yet hit the southern hemisphere, while the north finally delivers on its spring promise and the weather is consistently better, the Mediterranean warms up enough to get in the water without too much fuss and flowers bloom in abundance; even the far reaches of northern USA reach relatively comfortable temperatures. May day was the traditional festival that marked the end of winter and beginning of summer. These days much of the world is more likely to celebrate May Day – May 1 not as the beginning of summer but as International Workers’ Day. We have listed our favourite May destinations below.
Marking the start of summer in the northern hemisphere, June brings sunny weather and longer days. This is a good time to explore Europe and North America, with natural beauty in abundance. Winter is starting in the southern hemisphere and the cooler weather makes this ideal for a visit to Australia's Northern Territory, which can be unbearably hot for much of the year; and Machu Picchu, where the cooler weather is great for hiking.
Summer is in full swing in the northern hemisphere, bringing long days, clear skies, and bright sunshine. If you want to make the most of this from a beachside position, be prepared for crowds since it is the school vacations—even less obvious resorts in the Channel Islands or Corsica can get busy. This is a great time to experience some of the world's most vibrant festivals, including the Running of the Bulls in Spain, and the tropical Fiesta de Merengue in the Dominican Republic.
Across the northern hemisphere the long summer days continue. Get relief from the heat by visiting forests and lakes—they're not only picturesque but also help keep the temperature down a little. Parts of the southern hemisphere, such as Mozambique, provide ideal warm, winter hideaways in beautiful surroundings. August also sees one of the world's greatest spectacles—the wildebeest migration on the Masai Mara in Kenya—and the world's largest and most famous celebration of the arts—the Edinburgh Festival.
This is a great month for trying out some of Europe's southern hotspots, now the crowds have left the beaches—the lovely summer sunsets in Greece and Turkey will be unforgettable. But all evidence of summer has not yet gone—Provence's cuisine and even Vermont's colourful leaf display are legacies of summer; you could claim the beer at the Oktoberfest is summer in a glass (well you could try). The southern hemisphere is entering spring, making it a great place for wildlife-spotting, particularly in southern Africa.
October marks the middle of autumn in the northern hemisphere. The shortening of the days and importance of gathering in the harvest are reflected in the wine festivals starting to take place around Europe. There's still time to catch the fall foliage displays of North America or, for something different, see the Japanese ones instead. Meanwhile, in the southern hemisphere, things are beginning to heat up as spring approaches - perfect for a tango in Buenos Aires or a swim in the Great Barrier Reef.
It's the start of winter in the northern hemisphere; travellers can embrace the cooling weather by taking to the ski-slopes of Europe or hide from it indoors with some pampering in a luxurious spa. November is a good time to visit the USA—just in time for Thanksgiving. It is also a month when the heat and humidity of the Mississippi has gone and travellers can comfortably explore the river's historic towns. Alternatively, head south to soak up the start of the southern hemisphere's summer season. Lounge on the beaches, explore the mangrove forests of Margarita Island, or visit Ghana on Africa's Gold Coast, with its rich colonial history.
For much of the world, December brings a grand finale to the year, with celebrations announcing the end of one year and the beginning of the next. From fireworks over Sydney Bridge to wild revelry on Copacabana beach in Rio, the parties go with a bang. In a chilly Europe, Christmas is celebrated in style in Vienna, where magical markets entice shoppers to join in the festive spirit, and in snowy Lapland children can deliver their letters directly to Santa. But it is the other extreme as you head farther south, where romancing couples can share a beach hammock in the Caribbean and adventurers can dive with manta rays in Yap.
