Mauritius Weddings

What better place than to start on your adventure as Mr & Mrs! A paradise beach coupled with culture.

Just 40 miles by 25 miles, this diminutive island has a relaxed, Caribbean feel. With charter flights prohibited, it is unquestionably an up market, year-round paradise for tourists who are particularly attracted to its lengthy stretches of desert-island beaches where some of the world's best hotels are situated. This one time French colony, won by the British in 1810 - Mauritius gained liberty in 1968 and became a republic, incorporating the island of Rodrigues, in 1992. Principally a sugar-producing island with much of the countryside given over to fertile cane fields, its present-day fiscal success lies in tourism and textiles.

Travelling to Mauritius is best during the months between June-November worst times are between Dec-Apr.

Although we have recommended the following recommended vaccinations, we strongly advise that you contact your GP/Doctor for further advice

It is required you spend a minimum of 3 working days before you wedding.

You will need to bring the following documents with you to Mauritius to obtain your wedding licence:

  • Original birth certificates
  • Valid UK passport with at least 6 months validity on your return
  • Affidavit confirming your status
  • Decree absolute if previously married
  • Change of name deed – if required
  • Deed poll notice – if required
  • Adoption papers – if required

The minimum age to marry in Mauritius is 18
You will be required also to have copies of all the above documents sent to us no later than 6 weeks before your departure

For divorced or widowed women – please note – wedding can only go ahead after 300 days after the divorce decree or from the date of death certificate of spouse or else should be holder of a medical certificate stating no pregnancy.  This certificate must be issued in Mauritius at additional cost.

Any of the above which is an any language other than English or French must be officially translated, certified and be accompanied by the original document.

The thought of marrying in a different country can make couples apprehensive, what are expected of us, what vows are exchanged etc, so we have described some examples of the ceremonies that may be used during a traditional wedding celebration in Mauritius.  Depending on local traditions to the area and the people involved on your day, some of these may be included in your wedding ceremony.   We hope this will give you a feel for the exciting and exotic nature of your celebration.  The staff organising your wedding will be pleased to go into further detail if needed during your meeting at your hotel.

It will be necessary for legal formalities to be completed by you prior to your Wedding being reconfirmed while you are in Mauritius.  We recommend that you allow at least one whole day for this procedure that takes place in Port-Louis at the Civil Status Office.  As each case is very individual, some formalities maybe a little longer or quicker!  Either way, assistance will be given to you locally by the Wedding Coordinator at your hotel.  Most couples have given us positive feedback about the legalities of applying for a licence and found it to be an exciting and interesting part of the experience of getting married overseas.  The hotel staff will of course be very pleased to attend to any last minute question you have about your Wedding.
